Abstract

Chemical kinetic study of the esterification of mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate with 2-ethyl hexanol was carried out to find the reaction mechanism when catalyst, such as acid or base, was not used.
The rate equation determined experimentally was second order for mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and first order for 2-ethyl hexanol. The plot of temperature dependence of reaction rate constant of this equation gave an activation energy value of 18 kcal/mole.
Some discussion of the reaction mechanism was also given.
